Virgin Media Broadband Upload Speed

Comments Off

Don’t get me wrong – I am no big fan of Virgin Media. I am actually quite annoyed by these guys. But there is one thing they have recently achieved that probably would bring them ahead of their competition.

In addition to their fast 40 Mbit/s and 50 Mbit/s with 100Mbit/s in the pipeline, Virgin media have manage to provide quite good upload speeds of up to 5Mbit/s. These of you who have ever hosted a server know that the speed your server is serving pages at depends on your broadband connection upload speed. And that was a major problem for hosting a server at your house or office, providing you didn’t have a dedicated T1 leased line costing hundreds to thousands of pounds per month.

Broadband internet service providers were competing to offer constantly growing download speeds but no one really was paying attention to the upload figures. Until recently they were in the region of 256 Kbit/s – 500 Kbit/s. Figures of 1Mbit/s and more were (and still are) considered significantly fast.

Not anymore. Virgin Media have managed to provide speeds of up to 5 Mbit/s to residential properties where their normal cable service is available. Those who have it in their area can be considered lucky, of course if they need the upload speed. Well, most people don’t but for these who do – Virgin Media is the place to go.

Well done from me, although they still have an issue with static IP addresses. They don’t offer them. That could cause a bit of frustration to some but I’d rather have a good upload speed than a static IP address.
